Aflatoxins are toxins produced by fungi on crops, crop residue, feed ingredients stored under moist conditions. These toxins find the way to milk of the animal fed with infected feed/fodder. The most common type of aflatoxin found in milk is M1, that is harmful to the cow and the consumer as well. Aflatoxins on regular ingestion causes hepatic/liver toxicity.
Cows fall sick and may require administration of antibiotics to cure. These antibiotics flow through to the milk. The most common antibiotic found in milk is beta-lactum, regular exposure of which can affect digestive health in humans. In acute cases, it can lead to reduced production of RBCs in infants. At MilkLane, we educate the farmers on disease prevention and to keep the cows healthy. We have strict guidelines on milk quality and safety measures.
Adulterants like salt, urea, sugar, formalin, starch are added to milk to chemically increase shelf-life of milk, add whiteness and increase the volume for higher gains. Consuming adulterated milk can be very dangerous for the consumer. It causes gastrointestinal causing nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. As it is very toxic, it can cause kidney and liver damage, especially in infants.
